Working Mom VS. Stay At Home Mom

February 2, 2008

Deciding to become a working mom or a stay-at-home mom (SAHM) is, for me, one of the most crucial stage as well as a dreaded decision for a mom and a mommy-to-be. Maybe this is an easy question for some, nevertheless, this question is open for all moms around the globe who are pondering about this question… Should I be a working mom, or a stay-at-home mom?

Let’s all compare the pros and cons of both sides. First, the pros of a working mom. What good does it make to have a mother work for her family? One best reason would be for financial purposes. Maybe the spouse’s salary is not enough to feed the whole family, that’s why she has to help in some ways. This may not be applicable to all, like the rich people, but for some, this is something to think about… So, what about the pros of a SAHM? Well, one is to be with her family all the time, especially the kids. No need to hire a maid to look over the kids, thus slashing some of the monthly salary expense for the maid. This is great if her husband has a stable work and her family is not experiencing any hardships whatsoever financially.

From my own point of view and experience as well, I want to be a working mom, but I have to be a SAHM. Why? Financially, my family is not stable enough that’s why we live in my parent’s house, which is in a way a good thing for us. So why don’t I look for a job? Because I can’t (for now). As I’ve said, we are financially challenged so I cannot afford to hire a maid and my parents are not willing to take care of my baby. So I’m stuck as of now. But I believe I’ll be able to work if my baby starts to walk. At least my parents can look after her easily compared to now (baby’s 6-months old). I guess I’ll just wait for the right moment.

So there. My brief but un-concluded post. How about you? Which side do you choose? Working mom or SAHM mom?

  1. Helloo! I went through the same thing way back when . . . Financial stability is perhaps what we all aim for. That’s perfectly natural. But in this day and age, there are so many ways to earn money without having to tie yourself down to a 9-5 job. Believe me! I’ve been doing it for 11 years now. You just have to be creative. Mothers have to put their children first. That is the natural order of things.

  2. for me, even i am facing a big financial crisis….i still vote for being a SAHM. i think it’s better. mas malapit ka sa mga bata which is the most important thing…
