For many people, moving house can be a tiring, challenging experience that can conjure up scenarios involving broken belongings, aching backs and an overwhelming mess! To maintain your sanity, it is important to maintain a positive attitude and not sweat the small stuff. If you are organised, you will also save yourself some painful headaches. No matter whether you are moving as a homeowner or a renter, the following five tips will come in handy, so read on!

1. Get Cleaning

When leaving your current abode as a renter, you need to leave the place in tip-top condition so that you can get your bond back. That means it’s time to bust out the mop, the vacuum, and the cleaning supplies and get your hands dirty. Of course, if you don’t have the time or expertise to get the job done, there are plenty of professional cleaners and companies such as Absolute Domestics that can help. If you’re a homeowner moving on to better things, the first thing you should do upon arrival is to assess how hygienic the place is and do a quick clean if necessary.

2. Pack an Overnight Bag

Things are going to be a little messy for the first few weeks of your tenure at your new residence, so when packing up, be sure to set aside your essentials. This can include a set of pyjamas, your toiletries and make-up, a set of clothes for your next day at work, and any other items that you will need as soon as you move into the new place. Remember to also clearly label this special box or use the luggage you normally use when going on overnight trips.

3. Update Your Address

Yup, as painful as it may be, you need to take the time to update your address with anyone that may be sending you mail. Start by making a list of these individuals and companies and then work your way through it. Your bank, doctor, school, insurance company, and superannuation fund should all take priority, while relevant government departments could also make an appearance on your list. Also visit your local post office and arrange for your mail to be re-directed to your new home.

4. Arrange for the Connection and Disconnection of Utilities

Next on your to-do list is to get in touch with your utility appliers and ensure that your gas, water, and electricity is disconnected at your old address and turned on at your new one. While you’re there, get in touch with your internet provider too!

5. Change the Locks at Your New Home

Getting settled in your new residence can leave you feeling proud and satisfied at what you have accomplished. To ensure that your new nest is secure, make an appointment with a locksmith and have your locks changed pronto! If you are planning on doing a few renovations and tradespeople will be in and out of your house, then it may be worth waiting till the initial work is done. Consider keeping your valuable items at a relative’s home in the meantime.
